Lemosho Route

7 Days Itinerary

Day 1: 

Londorossi Gate (2,250m/7,382ft) to Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m/9,252ft)

  • After breakfast, drive to the Londorossi Gate and complete the necessary registration.

  • The hike starts with a moderately steep path through the rainforest which leads to the Big Tree Camp

  • Look out for monkeys and interesting birds along the way. 

  • Approximate trekking time is 3-4 hours to cover the 7 kilometers (4.3 miles)

Day 2: 

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m/9,252ft) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m/12,795ft)

  • Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zone

  • Trek across rolling hills and valleys whilst enjoying the panoramic views of the Shira Plateau a high desert-like landscape where you can enjoy the views of the Senecia plants growing to over 8m in height.

  • Reach Shira 2 Camp where you will relax and spend the night after approximately 18 kilometers (11.2 miles) taking 7-8 hours.

  • As the sun sets you might see the summit glowing in the afternoon sun.

Day 3: 

Shira 2 Camp (3,900m/12,795ft) to Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft)

  • Today, ascend to a higher altitude to aid acclimatization.  After breakfast you will set off to the Lava Tower (4,600m) where you will stop for lunch.

  • Descend to Barranco Camp which known for its beautiful views, through the challenging but exhilarating section of the Barranco Wall.

  • Todays trek will cover approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), taking an estimated 6-8 hours

 


Day 4:

Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft) to Karanga Camp (4,035m/13,200ft)

  • Begin the day with a steep climb up the daunting Barranco Wall.  Soon you will realize it looks worse than it actually is and once you reach the top, you will be above the clouds.  This is a perfect location to snap those 'air jump' photos.

  • Continue trekking along the mountain ridge into the Karanga Valley and outthrough alpine desert terrain, with stunning vistas.

  • After approximately 4-5 hours you will reach the Karanga Camp after the 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) day's trek for your overnight stay.  The camp offers fantastic view of the southern glacier of Kibo as well as the Kibo summit.

Day 5: 

Karanga Camp (4,035m/13,200ft) to Barafu Camp (4,680m/15,354ft)

  • Ascend further through the desolate and rocky moon-like landscape, with less vegetation to Barafu Camp the final base camp before the summit.

  • From this camp you can enjoy a full view of Mawenzi peak.

  • After completing the easy 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) trek in approximately 4-5 hours you will have an plenty of time to rest up, eat an early dinner and sleep to prepare for the summit climb

Day 6: 

Barafu Camp  (4,680m/15,354ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft) and descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft)

  • It will be dark and cold as you set off for the summit attempt around midnight.

  • Hiking through the night, you will reach Stella Point at the crater rim at sunrise and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, covering just 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in 6-8 hours.

  • Celebrate your achievement and take in the incredible views.

  • Head back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue to the Mweka Camp for a well deserved overnight stay after the 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) descent taking 4-6 hours.

Day 7: 

Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft) to Mweka Gate (1,650m/5,413ft)

  • After breakfast, descend through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate.

  • The decent is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) & estimated to take 3-4 hours

  • Once at the gate, you will receive your summit certificates and say goodbye to your trekking team

 

You now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner, descent bed and celebrations!!
