Mount Meru

Mount Meru, which overlooks Arusha from the north, is used by many trekkers as a warm-up trek. Similar to that of its neighbor Kilimanjaro in that it is also has a volcanic summit and that upon getting to the summit at 4566m/14,980ft you will climb through a number of vegetation zones

4 Days Itinerary

Day 1
Moshi Hotel to Momella Gate (1,500m/4,921ft) to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m/8,250ft)

  • The day will start with a pick up from your hotel, followed by an approximately 2 hour drive to Momella Gate, where you will register, meet your guide & porters and begin your trek.

  • The trail starts with a gentle ascent through the dense rainforest of Arusha National Park, offering opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various bird species.

  • Midway point: The halfway point is known as the Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend the night. The hike to Miriakamba Hut is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and takes around 4-5 hours.

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut (2,514m/8,250ft) to Saddle Hut (3,570m/11,712ft)

  • Begin the day early with a hearty breakfast before starting the second day's hike.

  • The trail gradually ascends through moorland vegetation, characterized by heather and grasses, before reaching the alpine desert zone.

  • The day's destination is the Saddle Hut which sits between the Little Meru and Mount Meru peaks. The hike to Saddle Hut is approximately 4-5 kilometers (2.5-3.1 miles) and takes approximately 3-4 hours.

  • Upon reaching Saddle Hut, we encourage you to go on an acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m/12,533f) in the afternoon, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

  • Get a good nights rest as you'll be up in the early hours to start the summit.

Day 3

Saddle Hut (3,570m/11,712ft) to Mount Meru Summit  (4,566m/14,980ft) and decent to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m/8,250ft)

  • Start the final ascent to Mount Meru's summit early in the morning, usually around 2 a.m. to 3 a.m., in order to witness the sunrise from the summit. This section of the climb involves ascending steep slopes and navigating rocky terrain.  The distance from Saddle Hut to Meru Summit is approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) and can take between 5-7 hours.

  • The trail leads to Rhino Point (3,800m/12,467ft), a strategic viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of Kilimanjaro, Arusha National Park, and the surrounding landscape.

  • From Rhino Point, continue along a steep ridge to the summit of Mount Meru also known as Socialist Peak. 

  • After enjoying the summit views, descend back to Saddle Hut for a rest and lunch. It typically takes around 3-5 hours to descend the same 4 kilometer (2.5 miles) distance

  • From Saddle Hut, continue the descent to Miriakamba Hut, where you will spend the final night on the mountain.  This section of the decent is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and usually takes around 4 to 6 hours.

Day 4

Miriakamba Hut (2,514m/8,250ft) to Momella Gate (1,500m/4,921ft)

  • After breakfast, begin the final descent from Miriakamba Hut back to Momella Gate which is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) taking around 3-4 hours.

  • Descending through the montane forest, you might spot more wildlife along the way.

  • Arrive at Momella Gate, where you will sign out and receive your summit certificates and be transported back to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi.
